Darin and Kelly were married June 19, 2011 at Bent Mountain Lodge near Floyd, Va. They had a small ceremony packed with a lot of fun, fellowship and love. To me, it was an ideal wedding to work. It was intimate and I knew many of the people there from my assignments at the Roanoke Times. I even photographed Kelly’s brother, Micha when he got married last year to Holly, and shot their engagement session.
Kelly and Darin hired me to shoot solo but also ordered a wedding album through Kiss Wedding Books, which produces some amazing wedding albums with leather or linen covers, lay-flat binding and small brag books for purchase.
Below are some photos of the books and a selection (the album had 13 spreads for 26 pages total) of the pages designed by my brother Todd who is a talented designer and photographer. You can see his work here.
Kelly took time out to talk to me about the quality of the books and her overall experience working with me. Overall she enjoyed “the quality, the perspective, the unrehearsed results, the details and variety,” of my images. But read for yourself!
What was your initial reaction to the photos?
Amazing, you captured the small moments that made our day complete. You captured the little things, that made our big day special. The pictures were not your cookie cutter “pose-and-go” routine you typically see. They captured the energy and emotions of our day.
How did you feel about the quality of the book?
It was very elegant and so professional. It looks like a book, more than an album. It is classy and sophisticated while still being very simple.
What was it like working with me? What do you think sets me apart from other photographers? What did you enjoy most? what made it easy?
You know how to shoot a wedding. While you could make a schedule for the pics you want, you capture them in an unrehearsed more intimate way than posing us to achieve the wanted outcome. Your style and dedication to your clients having what they want sets you apart. You are prompt, organized and interact well within the wedding setting to be unobtrusive, yet still get the shots between the big moments. You helped me relax and not think about “getting the right pictures.” You were self directed at the location and required little outside direction and were non-disruptive during the event. We had our day and the pictures didn’t take hours to obtain.
Kelly and Darin, thank you for the kind remarks and for hiring me. It is always a privilege to document such an important day in a couple’s life together!
